First off the rank is the gorgeous Adele from Butter & Co, our immediate neighbors right down stairs. If you haven’t experienced this Patisserie and its delectable treats, do yourself a favor and pop in for one of their famous coffee and treats.
Sara : You are quite the talented chef, tell us how you became so passionate about your craft?
Adele :My passion came from traveling I think. I visited a few places that blew me away with their food and it just dawned on me that I think I’d like to do this for a job. I’d had an array of random jobs over the years but had always looked to cooking as relaxation and creativity. So I switched the hobby to my career and started my pastry apprenticeship when I was 24.
Sara : This might be a tricky one for you… but what are your top three recommendations that come from the kitchen of Butter and Co ?
Adele : My favorite pastry is the almond croissant, the opera cake is seriously delicious, and our housemade pies are amazing. If I do say so myself!
Sara : For all of the budding young chefs that come into Butter & Co, how old were you when you made for your first cake and what was it ?
Adele : I think the first thing I made was scones when I started food tech in high school. I was an extremely fussy eater as a kid so cooking wasn’t something I was interested in til a lot later on.
Sara : We love your space and the vibe you’ve been able to create, did you have something or someone that inspired it and if so can you tell us about that?
Adele : Thank you! I was inspired by my favorite Wes Anderson film The Grand Budapest Hotel actually. Sounds obscure, but I took a lot of inspiration from the colours and put my own spin on it to turn it into this space. I was also Pinteresting and making mood boards like a mad woman for about 2 years!
Sara : Where is your favorite place in the whole world to find amazing sweet treats? Can you give us an insiders tip on an amazing local café/bakery to visit?
Adele : I think there are amazing sweet treats in every place I’ve traveled. Some of them have been in Paris’s oldest patisserie, Napoli’s first gelateria or London’s best high tea. But I think having a fresh Portuguese tart from Manteigaria in Lisbon is a food memory that will always be etched into my brain.
Sara : We love being located in Pakington Street in the heart of Newtown and being neighbors with you. Can you share with us why you were drawn to this location?
Adele : We do too! I think being surrounded by other great shops and cafes is what drew me to this spot. I thought the only thing missing in Newtown was a patisserie so here we are!
Sara : And just for fun to finish with what is the most spectacular mistake you have made in the kitchen?
Adele : I think making 40litres of electric neon pink marshmallow (which was supposed to be baby pink) has got to be my most spectacular kitchen fail to date.
