The Gift of Imperfection by Brene Brown

Embracing imperfection in an imperfect world.  While I’m extremely grateful for everyone and everything I have in my life, it’s hard not to feel defeated by the overarching impact COVID has had.

The subsequent and dividing views on all relating matters also do their best to drive the doom and gloom that little bit further.

I had endeavored to stay somewhat sane by adopting a, more Netflix, less headline news attitude, with a hope that the world will eventually be a little more the way it was very, very soon. In other words, bury your head in some very comfortable sand and wait until it all goes away.

So, when that wasn’t working a friend of mine gifted me with Brené Brown’s – The Gifts of Imperfection and it couldn’t have been more well-timed.

Brown is a research professor and author. The focus of this book is around wholehearted living, who we are, right now, is enough, and it takes you through ten guideposts.

Guidepost 2, for example, Brown talks about letting go of perfectionism and encouraging self-compassion. Striving for perfection, often, leads to negative self-talk and emotions.

Right now, it’s easy to get lost in that ideal trying to create a routine around balancing work, home-schooling, and making sure everyone is eating enough vegetables, getting some exercise, and feeling okay.

Embracing imperfection, being kind to ourselves and believing we’re doing enough allows us to be compassionate to others and reminds us of the COVID cliché, that we’re all in this together.
